The Art of Surrender: A Story of Failure and Realignment

May 17, 2025

Sometimes, things just don’t go our way, especially when Mercury is in retrograde! If you’ve ever experienced those moments where everything seems to go pear-shaped, you know exactly what I mean.
We can easily slip into the victim mindset—asking, “Why me?”—but let me tell you, living in that victimhood mentality will never support our happiness or mental wellbeing.

I’d like to share with you about a recent experience that turned out to be a lesson in surrender. I’ve always been deeply passionate about teaching and learning about dharma—our life’s purpose, our truest self-expression. Recently, I poured my heart and soul into creating a new mentoring program called Your Dharma Design. It’s a three-month transformational journey designed to help you align your life and bring the projects you’ve kept on the back burner to fruition.

I was beyond excited to launch it; the launch date was supposed to be a week ago. The energy was electric.

Then… things went awry.

Everything fell apart just before we made it live on the website. My tech guy disappeared, and the design lady and I had a total miscommunication (bloody mercury :). I burnt my dinner (classic), and as I tried to find some peace and comfort by sitting near the fire with a nice cup of adaptogens, I spilt it all over the floor the minute I sat down. At that point, I burst into laughter. The gods (or life, however you choose to see it) sometimes conspire to make us slow down, surrender, and remember that the idea of control is an illusion.

This moment of chaos and a sense of failure made me pause and reflect on the deeper purpose of the course—The Dharma Design. What is this course about, after all? It’s about nourishing our bodies, strengthening our minds, and preparing ourselves to live our highest expression of who we are. But this is only possible when we surrender to something greater than ourselves.

In the yogic tradition, Shakti, the feminine force or the divine mother, will only guide us when we are at her feet, humbled enough to become her employee, to express in this life the divine within us, in the projects we create, in the way we are in relationships, in the way we make a living, in the way we care for ourselves.
As soon as I stopped pushing, the tech guy reappeared. Emails started flowing in. Things started to fall into place, not because I made them but because I let go.

So, here’s my suggestion for the next few weeks: When everything is pushing you to move forward, when you feel like you should be running, and if life starts slowing you down, pause. When things don’t seem to be going in your desired direction, find the courage to be grateful for the slowdown. Remind yourself: What’s happening is just realignment. It’s just redirection.
Feel the difference in your nervous system when you surrender to what presents itself. Feel how your body relaxes when you see this moment of pause as a realignment to where you need to be—not where your mind thinks you should be. Maybe, just maybe, surrender, patience, and trust will open doors where there once were only walls.
