This past week, I’ve spoken to six people with cancer. Three of them are close friends.
It’s heartbreaking—and increasingly common. Statistics suggest that by 2030, most of us will either face cancer ourselves or walk closely with someone who does.
But here’s the most important thing: it’s not your fault.
We live in a toxic world—chemicals in our water, pesticides in our food, microplastics in our bodies, and emotional toxicity in the form of stress, fear, overdrive and disconnection.
We all carry cancer cells. The question is: do we feed them, or do we starve them?
In Ayurveda, these cells begin to grow when the immune system is weakened, digestion is impaired, and Ama (undigested, toxic residue) builds up in the tissues. In short, when the body’s natural intelligence is overwhelmed, these cells find room to multiply.
Ayurveda teaches that the root of many diseases—including cancer—begins in a disturbed metabolism, blocked bodily channels, and unresolved emotional patterns. This aligns with what many modern studies now confirm: cancer is often a lifestyle disease. And so, lifestyle can also be medicine.
Modern medicine has made great strides—chemotherapy, surgery, and immunotherapy have saved lives. But as with all systems, it has limitations. Ayurveda offers a lens that doesn’t just fight disease—it rebuilds health from the root. Not either/or. Both can work together.
When we support the body with rhythm, rest, clean food, deep sleep, nourishment and inner peace, those same cancer cells lose their fuel.
What shuts down our immune system?
- Chronic stress
- Refined sugar and processed food
- Poor or broken sleep
- Loneliness and lack of emotional safety
- Overeating or eating late at night
- Toxic relationships and unprocessed emotions
- Microplastics and chemical-laden food
- Loss of digestive strength
What strengthens the system?
- Eating lightly and rhythmically – I advise that your last meal be by 6 pm, and break and if you break the fast around 9 am. It gives your body time to restore and heal, not just digest.
- Supporting gut health – Research shows the Akkermansia bacteria help the body respond better to treatment. You can support it with cranberries, pomegranates, chilli, and clean fibre.
- Deep sleep and early nights
- Movement to support circulation and detox
- True connection – not likes, but shared moments
- Processing emotions through journaling, breath, stillness, or therapy
- Ayurvedic food wisdom – cooked, warm, digestible meals suited to your constitution- use any of the recipes in the recipe page on the website, as it’s all ‘starving cancer’ recipes
- Rebuilding Agni (digestive fire) and removing Aam (toxic residue)
- Tending to hormonal health
Cancer is a cell that stops communicating with the rest of the body.
Communicating with yourself, others, and nature is a great way to prevent this complicated condition.
