I wanted to share some reflections from a recent webinar conversation I had with Dr Ramanandan, who works closely with us during our longevity detox programmes. We spent a long time talking about autoimmune conditions, why they are becoming so common, and how Ayurveda approaches both prevention and healing.
Autoimmune conditions are rising quietly, especially among women. Today, around five to ten percent of people live with an autoimmune disorder. Women are affected more often due to a mix of hormonal influences, lifestyle patterns, long-term stress, and immune sensitivity.
In Ayurveda, autoimmune disease is not seen as weak immunity or overactive immunity. It is understood as a loss of balance and immune tolerance. When inflammation is present, the body begins reacting against its own tissues.
Lifestyle and food play a much bigger role than we often realise. Processed foods, irregular eating, poor digestion, lack of movement, excess screen time, disturbed sleep, and constant mental stimulation all gradually disturb the system. Over time, this creates inflammation and confusion within the immune response.
Gut health is central to all of this. A healthy immune system begins with strong digestion. When digestion weakens, Ama, or toxic metabolic residue, starts to accumulate. This leads to inflammation, tissue irritation, and misdirected immune activity. Supporting digestion is one of the most important preventive steps.
One of the key points Dr Ramanandan emphasised is that inflammation is the real problem. Autoimmune antibodies cannot act unless inflammation is present. When inflammation is reduced, immune reactions often calm down naturally. This is why Ayurveda always focuses on settling inflammation first.
Detoxification also plays an important role when done correctly. Proper detox, including Panchakarma when appropriate, does not weaken immunity. Instead, it helps redirect and normalise immune function. Seasonal detox or post-infection cleansing can be deeply protective.
Fasting and light eating are simple but powerful tools. Even skipping one heavy meal or eating lighter for a few days can reduce inflammation and support immune balance, especially for those dealing with chronic inflammation or weight gain.
There is no single approach that works for everyone. Some people need detoxification, others need nourishment. Some benefit from oil therapies, while others need drying approaches. Correct diagnosis matters far more than disease labels.
Stress cannot be separated from immune health. Mental strain, emotional overload, and constant stimulation disturb both the nervous system and immunity. Ayurveda places great importance on calmness, routine, and mental clarity as part of long-term healing.
Some simple Ayurvedic principles for prevention includes protecting digestion by eating only when hungry and choosing warm, freshly cooked foods. Reducing inflammation early with lighter diets when needed. Living in rhythm with seasons and daily cycles. Keeping meals simple. Caring for the gut microbiome. Using gentle fasting wisely. Moving regularly without exhaustion. Managing mental stress. Doing gentle detox during seasonal transitions or after illness.
The core Ayurvedic understanding is simple but powerful. Autoimmune imbalance develops when digestion weakens, inflammation builds, and immune tolerance is lost. By restoring balance in food, lifestyle, mind, and metabolism, the body is supported to heal naturally, often reducing the need for lifelong dependence on medication.
