Practices for Mental Health According to Your Constitution

Nov 5, 2024

I’m finishing my Ayurvedic psychology studies, which will bring much more insight into what can support us.
It is very effective when we treat the whole person, starting with digestion and other physiological needs, emotional tendencies, mental function, and the spiritual fulfilment we need according to our constitution.
Working with your dosha involves balancing lifestyle routines, diet, exercise, and mental health practices to stabilise your dosha and lead to a Sattvic (balanced) mind.

Here’s how each dosha relates to mental health:

Vata Dosha (Air & Ether)

Is creative, energetic, spontaneous, and quick-thinking.
Mental Health Tendencies: Vata types are prone to anxiety, worry, restlessness, and fear when out of balance. They may struggle with grounding themselves and often have racing thoughts or irregular sleep patterns. Excessive Vata can lead to feeling scattered, forgetful, and overwhelmed.
Balancing Practices: Vata types benefit from routines, grounding practices, and warmth. Regular sleep, steady mealtimes, and calming activities such as meditation, gentle yoga, and slow breathing exercises help. Foods that are warm, moist, and nourishing also soothe Vata.

Pitta Dosha (Fire & Water)

Determined, focused, ambitious, and perceptive.
Mental Health Tendencies: When unbalanced, Pitta types may experience anger, frustration, irritability, and impatience. They are prone to stress, burnout, and intense emotions, which can lead to mental health challenges such as depression with agitation or even perfectionism.
Balancing Practices: Pitta types thrive on moderation and cooling practices.
It is helpful to incorporate calming, cooling exercises like swimming or walking in nature and mindfulness practices to manage stress. Cooling foods, regular breaks from work, and setting boundaries also support Pitta’s mental health. Herbs like amla, shatavari, and hibiscus can have cooling effects on the mind.

Kapha Dosha (Earth & Water)

Calm, compassionate, patient, and nurturing.
Mental Health Tendencies: An imbalanced Kapha can lead to sluggishness, lethargy, attachment, and even depression. They may experience a lack of motivation, heaviness, or difficulty processing emotions, leading to a sense of stuckness or withdrawal.
Balancing Practices: Kapha types benefit from stimulation and variety. Regular exercise, especially dynamic or invigorating practices like brisk walking, dance, or energizing yoga, helps.
Light, warming foods and spices like ginger, turmeric, and pepper keep Kapha moving.
Herbs such as Chaga mushroom tea lower ‘dampness’ in the body, like candida overgrowth, and bring vitality and help uplift Kapha. You can get the RECONNECT mix here (LINK)
