Let’s talk sugar cravings because after 40, we are more insulin resistant, and if it’s not under control, it makes us fat and depressed.
I will list herbs and foods that can support you and your microbiom, but let’s start with the root cause.
A client recently told me she couldn’t stop craving sugar in the afternoons.
She had tried cutting it out, fasting, and replacing it with herbal tea. Nothing worked.
When we explored what she was feeling in those moments, she paused and said: emptiness.
Afternoon tea was a ritual she used to have with her mum.
Her mother wasn’t always emotionally present, but this was one of the few moments they shared.
Making something sweet was her mum’s way of showing love.
So now, decades later, that craving wasn’t just about sugar.
It was about love. Safety. The longing to be seen.
The sweet taste is considered the most nourishing of all six tastes.
It’s the first taste we encounter in life—mother’s milk is sweet.
Sweetness is associated with love, safety, grounding, and contentment.
Even the word for enlightenment in Sanskrit, sukha, shares roots with the word “sweet” in Indo-European languages.
When we’re at peace, at ease, or fulfilled… It’s a sweet experience.
So the question is not: How do I stop this craving?
But rather: How can I bring more genuine sweetness into my life, without the sugar that makes me sick, addicted, and heavy?
A gentle reflection:
What would true sweetness look like for you now?
(A hug? Music? A moment of stillness? A nourishing meal shared with someone you love?)
Try this next time a craving arises:
When the urge comes, pause.
Instead of resisting it, meet it. As if you’re meeting a younger part of yourself who has a need.
Sit with that part gently, with presence.
Promise it: You will get the chocolate. Or whatever it is.
But first—listen.
Ask:
• What is the real hunger here?
After meeting the hunger, don’t try to fix it.
Simply say: You belong here. You are safe here.
Then, if you still want the sweet, go ahead.
Because often, just that moment of awareness is enough to shift the pattern.
Awareness is the actual healing.
Compassion is the healing.
Tending to your needs is healing.
Parenting yourself the way you wish you had been parented—that is the ultimate healing.
